Carcosa (Cassilda's Song)

from In Arkham's Shadow by The Plague Physicians

/

lyrics

Among the sister stars of the bull up in the skies
Shadows dance and grow where the twin suns rise
Where soon be ash they light a city hewn from stone
In the eye of Taurus spins a world by us unknown

Along the shore the cloud waves break,
The twin suns sink behind the lake,
The shadows lengthen
In Carcosa.

Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies
But stranger still is
Lost Carcosa.

A guest of honor among a crowd of modest size
In the Court of the Dragon, the guests shield their eyes
Hidden faces covered by masks made of bone
A sallow man in robes, who sits upon the throne

Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
Must die unheard in
Dim Carcosa.

Song of my soul, my voice is dead;
Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
Shall dry and die in
Lost Carcosa.

The sisters, the stranger, the masquerade ball
Dancing and feasting in costumes they call
The stranger and sisters broke from the fray
Under the sky, they were carried away
The stranger, Cassilda, Camilla, conversed
The simple request, the response it was terse,
“We’ve shed our disguises, so now must you too”
“Ladies I say that this face you see here is true”
